GLOW - Ruth as Protagonist
Saturday July 29, 2017 | Download episode
This episode is a deep dive into Ruth as protagonist. It's less a character summary and more a conversation about why she's our window into the world of wrestling. We then discuss alternative protagonists, including Carmen (Machu Pichu), Debbie (Liberty Belle), Cherry, Tammé (Welfare Queen), and Rhonda (Britannica). The show does a good job developing the characters, sometimes with small details you may not have noticed, but what would it mean to center these characters?
— 0:40 - Ruth's journey from feeling insignificant to feeling in control (via wrestling)
— 4:30 - Powerful roles and body autonomy
— 9:15 - Ruth in charge at the end (Ruth vs Cherry)
— 12:14 - Fish out of water narrative (Ruth vs Debbie and Machu Pichu)
— 18:43 - Rhonda (Britannica), Tammé (Welfare Queen), and others as protagonists

Eye Stab You, You Stab Me, We're a Shogun Family

Jason and Shawn give some takes on Shogun World, discussing motherhood, doppelgangers, and whether Delores is a big bad or a good leader. We also nitpick cortical fluid. Then, we do a new segment that we're temporarily calling trailer roundup (19:02), where we watch the trailers for some new shows and decide whether we're enticed or not. We take a non-spoiler look at: Arrested Development S5, GLOW S2, Killing Eve, FLCL S2/S3, and Cobra Kai.
Fun fact: GLOW was inspired by the 2012 documentary of the real-life ‘80s wrestling league (doc also on Netflix fyi). Two specific anecdotes in the new series were plucked straight from the documentary — the initial audition & Cherry’s sleeper hold on Melrose. Hear us discuss more about their similarities, intriguing differences, and future plot threads on our new podcast (link in bio!) . #glow #alisonbrie #glownetflix #glowup #gorgeousladiesofwrestling #marcmaron #bettygilpin
